Easy Hubpage Tutorial

1. How to Start a Hub Page

If you didn't grow up using computers, all kinds of little things will take a few extra minutes to learn. This tutorial will help beginners understand how to make a hub page. (Note: A "hub" is another word for a webpage, an article, or a post.)

Create a Title

The first thing you should do is to come up with a title (120 characters or less) in Microsoft Word. (If you use Microsoft Word, you can spell check your title.) Write your copy in Word for the same reason.

Claim Your Title

Go to hubpages.com. Click "START A NEW HUB" and this will take you to the "CREATE A HUB" page. Cut and paste your title from Microsoft Word into the “CHOOSE A TITLE” box. Then, fill out the rest of the “CREATE A HUB” page to claim your title and continue on. (Tip: Don't stress; your hubpage layout can be changed later.)

Go Write What You Want to Say

Now, go write your story or article in Microsoft Word. Have fun. You can put almost anything you want into your hub. It can be a story, a how-to article, a diary of your vacation, or a poem...whatever you feel like writing. (Tip: You can write a short paragraph or two for now if that's what you feel like doing.)

Next - Edit Your Page Layout

2. How to Set Up the Layout of Your Hub Page

On hubpages.com, go to the webpage where you build your hub. You will already be there, right now, if you just finished writing your title. This page might be called "ASSEMBLE YOUR CAPSULES" and it will have the title of your article at the top of the page.

Make Sure You Are in Edit

***Note: If you are having problems following the instructions, check to see if you are in "edit" mode. If you see EDIT in a black box above your title, click EDIT. You can't build your webpage unless you do this.

Create Your Layout

This editing page has two sections. The left side is where you add your writing and photos. The right side is where you arrange (or rearrange) your layout.

On the upper-right-hand side of the page, click "TEXT" a few times and click "PHOTO" a few times. Each of the little sections called "text", "photo", "comments" is a capsule. (Note: You can always get rid of capsules by clicking the red X.)

How to Make a Hub Page Like This One

In the gray box on the right-hand side of the page, drag the capsules up or down so that they alternate: photo, text, photo, text, photo, text, and put the comments capsule at the bottom. Note: You can change the order however you want, but try it this way for now.

3. How to Add Your Text into Hubpages

You need to add some text to your hub, so copy your text from Word and get ready to paste it. You can put all of your text into one long capsule or you can break it up into different capsules, like I did. Some kinds of hubs don't need any photos or fancy layouts.

  • Make sure you are in edit mode - if the left side of your page isn't divided into sections with gray horizontal lines, go to the top of the page and click "EDIT".
  • Pick one of the thick gray lines (on the left side) that says "TEXT", and click the word "EDIT" on that gray line.
  • You will get a pop-up box. Paste your text into the big blank square and give this capsule a name.
  • Click “save” to save that capsule.

How to Save Everything You've Done

It's always a good idea to save your work as you go...just in case. To save your work-in-progress: Click "DONE EDITING" at the top of the webpage. "DONE EDITING" also means "save". To get back in and continue building your page, you need to click the "EDIT" button at the top, above the title.

Next - Add a Photo

4. How to Add a Photo to Your Hub Page

If you don’t want to have a page that looks like one huge block of solid text, it’s nice to break up your page with photos. However, what you end up doing will depend on your personal style and the type of hub you envision. Personal stories or poems will not flow if pictures get in the way.

To Add a Photo to Your Hub

  • Go to one of the gray lines, on the left-hand side of the page, that says “PHOTO” and click “EDIT” on that line.
  • In the pop-up box, click “CHOOSE PHOTOS”. (I like to keep my selected photos on my desktop because I sometimes lose them if they're in a folder.)
  • Fill in the blanks, if you want. Click “SAVE”.

You Can Make Your Photo Smaller

5. How to Change the Size of a Photo

You can change your photo's size. If your photos seem too big and take up too much room, just make your photo smaller.

  • Go to the gray line above the photo and click “EDIT”.
  • Click “FULL WIDTH” under the thumbnail and change the size to “HALF WIDTH” or “QUARTER WIDTH”.
  • Click “SAVE” and see how it looks in the article.

To Move The Photo

You can use the arrows to put your photo to the right side or just play around with different looks. Sometimes, this will shift your text. Don’t worry…you can’t really break anything. If you want to change things again, just go back into the edit for that photo and try different ideas.

6. How to Rearrange the Order of Your Article

You can change the order of your photos or the order of your text capsules if you want.  First, make sure you're in "edit mode" by clicking "EDIT" at the top of the page. Then, on the right side of the editing page, you can move the capsules up and down.

Main Points:

*If you aren't in "edit mode" you can't make changes.

*You can only change text on the left-hand side of the edit page.

*You can only rearrange pictures, blocks of text, and other capsules on the right-hand side of the edit page.

7. How to Add Links and Hotlinks to Hubpages

There are three easy ways to add links to your hub. You can add inline hotlinks, create a list of other articles, or allow “SUGGESTED LINKS” where you link to other recommended articles on hubpages.com.

How to Make Inline or Embedded Hotlinks

  • You must be on the edit page.
  • Find the text where you want your hotlink.
  • Above the capsule with your chosen words, it says "TEXT" on a gray line; click "EDIT" on that line.
  • In the pop-up box, highlight the words you want and click the chain icon on the top right.
  • Paste the URL (of your other article) where it says “LINK URL” or link to one of your own hubpage articles where it says “QUICK LINK TO YOUR HUB”.
  • Click “INSERT”.
  • Click “SAVE”.

How to Add Article Links

  • You must be on the edit page.
  • On the right side of the page, click “LINKS”.
  • On the left side of the page, find the gray line with "link" and click on "EDIT".
  • Paste the URL of your article into the URL box.
  • Click “ADD LINK”.
  • Give it a title like “More Articles”.
  • Click “SAVE”.

How to Add Suggested Links

  • You must be off the edit page, so either publish the hub or click “DONE EDITING”.
  • Click the green button that says “Suggest Links” at the top of the page.
  • Click on the green highlighted words in the body of your hub and choose a few articles.

When you are done playing around with the editing and you are happy with your cool hub page, publish it (if you haven't already) and tell all your friends. There are lots of other ways to make a hubpage but this seems to be the easiest way for me. You will come up with your own method.

Sneaky Little Tricks

I learn as I go. I get bored with formal tutorials, so you may already know this stuff. However, I'm adding little shortcuts as I find them:

  • On the right, double-click a capsule to make the width narrower (half-sized).  Double-click again to make it the original size.

You say: "Sometimes, to get a small photo back to full size, it’s easiest to delete the small photo (click the red X) and start over. To do this, go to the right side of the page and add another “photo capsule”. Then upload the picture again."

What? All you need to do is click the arrow that points in both directions to get it back to full size. Then you can move it around (up/down) or to the right again with the arrows. Re-uploading the photo will definitely take more than.

Other than that I think it's a great and helpful hub.

SimeonVisser,

Thanks so much. I tried it so many different ways, but I did it one more time and this time it worked. I'll change that. Thanks.

I usually just dive into a new website and try to figure things out intuitively. Some parts of hubpages are easy and some were...different than what I'm used to.
